I saw this movie a while back, but it’s a movie that I have noticed a lot of people haven’t seen before. I’m not sure why, but I loved the hell out of it so I figured I definitely had to share it.
The description found on Eigapedia’s page for Dororo gives a good overview of the movie’s plot:
When the samurai warlord Daigo Kagemitsu trades his first-born son for victory in battle his son Hyakkimaru is born barely human. Forty-eight of his body parts have been distributed amongst demons and he is left in a basket to float down the river. A doctor named Jukai eventually discovers the infant and raises him as his own, building him a makeshift body out of spare parts. Hyakkimaru possesses special powers and an immunity to pain and injury. He decides to truly become human, he must use his abilities to take back the body parts stolen from him at birth. He sets off on a journey to defeat the 48 demons and along the way teams up with a thief named Dororo who assists him on his adventure and the inevitable confrontation with his father Daigo.
The movie is very much out there, but at the same time, those are the movies I tend to love the most.
Reason to Watch: The character development and plot are something rather foreign to what most people, at least those that are not native to Japan, are use to. Therefore, you’re guaranteed to see something more obscure and unique than you’re most likely use to, which for me is always the bonus. Overall, I thought the characters were portrayed quite well. You might not like the plot or characters, but that doesn’t say anything about how the actors themselves played those roles. Plus, who doesn’t like a movie about a man with a sword killing demons?
